Crane Brothers opened for business the 1st of February 2000. Our first sale was a white shirt (size 38), it was sewn by Veronica, my head seamstress, who still works for me and required a slight sleeve shortening. My future wife was at the shop opening and our life together started. I remember being a little slow the morning we opened (on time). I was also shitting myself that no one would come in. I started Crane Brothers because I was frustrated by the lack of proper mens tailoring and the sub standard service I received when shopping. I felt that no one had really taken the time to address what it was that men were looking for. The goal was to create an environment that made men feel confident and special, the way I like to feel when I shop, simple really, I didn’t want to advertise or brand everything out of existence and saw little point in sending out meaningless pieces of direct marketing or having Yearly Clearances every couple of months. I’m proud to say we’ve never had a Sale and have stuck to our guns. I grew up receiving cheerios from my local Butcher and recall our local suppliers sent us free calendars at Christmas with their name proudly displayed. They dropped things off on their way home and gave us a sense of comfort. We felt special and safe in the knowledge that if there was a problem of any sort it would be resolved. These were people who were proud that they got things made “locally” and wherever possible did what ever it took to get the job done. Doing the right thing by the people who mattered most, their customers. Any way that’s me, this is my store. I’ve got heaps of other stuff going on but this is my baby, the thing dearest to my heart. The one thing I’m probably most proud of excluding my family.
